GOP leaders on Trump's tweets: It's about politics

(16 Jul 2019) Republican leaders in Congress remained unwilling Tuesday to unequivocally rebuke President Donald Trump’s attack on progressive women of color in Congress, almost ensuring no real fallout from his party in Congress.
Speaking at a news conference in the House gallery, Republican leaders insisted the dispute between Trump and four Democratic congresswomen is about ideology and politics, not about race.
“I want to make absolutely clear that our opposition to our Socialist colleagues has absolutely nothing to do with their gender, with their religion or with their race. It has to do with the content of their policies,” said Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the House Republican conference chair.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy followed, “I believe this is about ideology. This is about socialism versus freedom. And it’s very clear what the debate is happening. I understand when I listen to their press conference yesterday they talked more about impeachment than anything else.”
The call from Democrats for Republicans to condemn Trump follow his tweets over the weeeknd suggesting four Democratic congresswomen of color return to their countries.   All are American citizensa nd three of the four were born in the United States.
Trump meanwhile continued to insist Tuesday that his tweets were not racially motivated, insisting on Twitter, “I don’t have a Racist bone in my body!”
